Il soldato sudista John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) si risveglia senza un'apparente spiegazione sul pianeta Marte. Si trova in una terra desertica e popolata da due razze di creature diverse: i giganteschi e guerrafondai marziani verdi e i pacifici marziani rossi, da sempre in lotta per il potere.
